Garden Volunteer Help Needed - April 6

11 - 4 pm

Help remove diseased fruit trees from the Danny Woo Community Garden.  This project will help clear the way for construction of the outdoor cookery this summer.  The project, funded by the City of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods, will create an active cooking and learning place for young and old alike.  Contact Rachel Duthler to volunteer - rduthler@interimicda.org.

The work will require lifting and hauling wood.  A side benefit is the opportunity to take home some firewood!

WILD Youth at Lunar New Year

Students in the Wilderness Inner-City Leadership Development (WILD) program engaged visitors to their booth at the 2014 Lunar New Year Celebration in Hing Hay Park.  They instructed young and old alike in making paper lanterns, while explaining coming changes to the park in the heart of the Chinatown - International District.

Gordon Hirabayashi (civil rights leader) honored at UW

InterIm CDA sponsored a staged reading of “Hold These Truths.”  Actor Greg Watanabe gave a moving performance at the Theatre Off Jackson to a sold out crowd on Saturday February 22, 2014 and a near sell out on Sunday February 23, 2014.

Working with family members of Gordon Hirabayashi, professor Steven Sumida, Gail Nomura, the University of Washington Ad Hoc Hirabayashi Committee; Jeanne Sakata (play writer), Jerry Arai; and, with the financial support of Tomio Moriguchi and Hideki Obayashi (UW grad, now in CA) – a special Day of Remembrance symposium was held at the University of Washington.

Students from Urban Artworks Paint I-5 Columns

Completing Phase II of the I-5 Column Project was accomplished in 2013.  Thanks to many partners and contributors, South King and South Jackson Streets are a more welcoming, vibrant, and safe entrance to the east side of the International District.

February Garden Update

City Fruit helped Danny Woo Community Garden staff and volunteers prune some of the 60 fruit trees in the garden.  An ongoing program of training volunteers in tree care will improve the orchard, make the trees healthier and increase yield.  If you would like to be part of this program contact Rachel at rduthler@interimicda.org.  Thank you, City Fruit and DWCG Volunteers!
