Our Story

Tucked behind a row of tall trees up against Seattle’s busy Interstate 5, it is easy to miss. This community garden is anything but ordinary.

The Danny Woo Community Garden was founded in 1975 and is located in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District at 620 South Main Street. The Garden is approximately 1.5 acres and contains nearly 100 plots that are cultivated and cared for by elderly Asian immigrant residents of the neighborhood. The garden is also home to a children’s garden, chicken coop, outdoor kitchen, and fruit tree orchard.

As the largest green space in the Chinatown/International District and Little Saigon area, the Danny Woo Community Garden is an essential place for the surrounding community to engage with nature, access safe and healthy food, and build cohesion with neighbors.

The Danny Woo Garden was created for community by community, and InterIm CDA works to maintain its existence as a resource for the gardeners, the CID community and the general public. Come check us out for a visit or attend one of our annual events or join as a volunteer! We have many volunteer opportunities throughout the year from individual to small group to corporate volunteer days. Contact volunteer@interimcda.org.

Summer pig roast in the Danny Woo Garden: InterIm CDA has held a traditional Filipino pig roast in the Danny Woo Garden for CID elders and the community every July since 1975, when the garden was created. It is a well-known cultural celebration in the CID among all who live, work, and visit the CID. The event is open to the public. We begin roasting the pig Friday evening, roast it all night long, and serve it on Saturday. Priority and first in line are our community seniors and gardeners! Join us in 2023 on July 21 and 22.

Apple Press Cider Party: The Danny Woo Garden has 63 fruit trees, including 28 pear trees, 19 apple trees, one cherry tree, one fig tree, and seven plum trees. Every fall, InterIm CDA and City Fruit hold an apple press cider party in the Danny Woo Garden for CID seniors using apples from the garden. This event is open to the community to promote social engagement and celebration of the fall harvest season.
